Green-Rainbow Treasurer candidate will run again

by Jamie O'Keefe

In 2002, I ran for Treasurer of the Commonwealth as the nominee of the then Green Party.

My campaign focused on three major issues:

› investing a portion of the public school teacher and state worker pension fund in local projects that will build our communities while paying a decent return to the pensionfund;

› making corporations accountable to employees, the people and our world by working with other socially responsible investors.

› additionally, as the nominee of the Green Party, I act as independent watchdog over our government and work to expand the control citizens have over their government including the lottery, which the Treasurer oversees.

Events at the time highlighted the need for the policies I was proposing. Bush's saber rattling over Iraq demonstrated the need to invest in energy conservation, as well as wind and solar energy. The collapse of Enron and the stock market showed that we needed to invest locally to build our economy and diversify our investments,

Four years have passed since I stood as the lone person in the Treasurer's race who was advocating for our communities and our environment. In that time, we have become mired in an occupation of Iraq, our environment continues to decline as global warming increases and corporations have expanded their tax breaks while laying off workers and cutting benefits.

Because of these and other issues, I have decided to run again of Treasurer of the Commonwealth. I believe, that my campaign, as well as the campaigns of my Green-Rainbow teammates running for Governor, Lt. Governor, Secretary of State and Auditor will demonstrate that an alternative to politics as usual is possible and can be built to take back power for the people at the state and local level.
