Supporters plan Boston fundraiser as cops press charges vs. Somerville 5

by International Action Center

The trial of the Somerville 5 has been postponed at the request of the defense. The trial for those to be tried as adults had been scheduled to begin on Monday, March 13 at Cambridge District Court. One of the defense attorneys is repotedly asking to be marked up for sometime in May.

The Somerville 5 are young Black men ranging from 15 to 18 years old, students at Somerville High School (SHS) who went out on the night of April 20, 2005 to enjoy a carnival in Medford.. But the night turned into one of horror that changed their lives forever.

They were beaten, maced, arrested and psychologically traumatized by 10 white Medford police, then charged with numerous crimes. What was an unprovoked police attack by racist cops was quickly covered up. The police, courts, D.A., local media, press and education officials have all worked together to frame-up these young men who have no prior record and are good students and athletes.

Police brutality has reached epidemic proportions in the communities of color in Boston. Police attacks and police terror against youth of color are an everyday occurrence.

While the U.S. enters its third year of war against the people of Iraq, they are at the same time waging war against poor people and people of color here at home. The billions of dollars used to kill Iraqi people are stolen from us in the form of huge cuts in funding to our schools, housing, food, childcare, healthcare, jobs, etc. The Pentagon and Bush are wiping out the future for our youth. The only thing they can offer is jails and the military. Let’s stand up and defend our youth!
