Call to support Mass. Dissection Choice Bill
Friday, June 23—The Massachusetts Dissection Choice Bill (H.1051) has been sitting in the House Committee on Steering, Policy, and Scheduling, and must be favorably moved out as soon as possible.
If you are a Massachusetts resident, please contact your Representative to show your support of H.1051.
Animalearn, the education department of the American Anti-Vivisection Society (AAVS), works to end the harmful use of animals in education, and supports laws that allow students the choice to opt out of dissection.
Animalearn wants to make Massachusetts the tenth state with a dissection choice law. Such a law would grant students in K-12 public schools the right to oppose dissection without compromising their education. By law, students who object to dissection must be provided with viable alternatives, which are more humane, cost-effective, and provide an equal or better learning experience.
Currently, nine states (California, Florida, Illinois, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Virginia) have established dissection choice laws and several other states have instituted local policies that allow students to say no to harming animals. Massachusetts students should be afforded this same opportunity.
In an effort to further this mission, Laura Ducceschi, Director of Animalearn, will attend the American Federation of Teachers' convention in Boston this July, helping to spread the word about dissection choice and The Science Bank, Animalearn’s comprehensive collection of over 300 humane alternatives that are available free for loan.
