Jail/Prison Moratorium — SHaRC’s Call to Action
People are asked to contact their elected officials
Now is the time to contact State officials.
- Tell them you support a moratorium on jail/prison construction expansion. If we were to take a 5-year break from building new jails and expanding upon existing ones, we could truly take the time to implement far more effective and less costly ways of developing healthy communities.
- Tell them you see opportunities in what some sheriffs see as crises. We can address the problems of "overcrowding" by releasing pre-trial folks into the community (that could take care of approximately 1/3 of the total prisoner population in the county jails). We can immediately divert non-violent drug offenders into the community, which will free up even more space.
- Tell them this is just the opportunity that can bring upon change for the better in our state. Massachusetts can lead the way out of the drug war and the mass incarceration of poor communities and communities of color.
We must let our Reps know we do not need to build newer, bigger, better jails and prisons to solve problems that are rooted in racism and classism. Not one more dollar for the punishment industry!
