‘Denise Simmons is the only sitting conuncillor worth considering’
The Progressive Democrats of Cambridge (PDC) have given their endorsement to 7 City Council candidates. Of these, five are incumbents. The commitment of the PDC to five incumbents makes their endorsement of so little worth, that Jesse Gordon is forced to resort to the Green-Rainbow Party name. So he the invited 2002 Green candidate for governor,Jill Stein, to endorse him at a fund-raiser to establish his ‘progressive’ credentials.
The only sitting Councillor who is worthy of consideration by people who care about our concerns is Denise Simmons. Had there been any Green-Rainbow Party of Massachusetts local endorsements, I believe she would have met all criteria based on Green Party values.
The actions of the PDC in making their endorsements have served to corroborate my impressions of the inability of the Democratic Party of Massachusetts to rise above the sectional and special interest compromises that prevent any effective action on the major concerns that face us.
The main questions for the PDC should not be whether Jesse Gordon can promote himself with a personal endorsement from Jill Stein—He might have even got one from me were he a little less cynical—but the governing of Cambridge, Massachusetts.
The five incumbents endorsed by the Progressive Democrats of Cambridge constitute a majority on the Cambridge City Council. Why has not that majority:
- Restored the Police Review and Advisory Board to its full function and role in protecting the safety and civil rights of our citizens?
- Demanded that the Middlesex attorney drop all charges against the people arrested at the Army Day demonstration in the Commons?
- Protected long time residents living on fixed incomes from being driven from the City by fiscal policies that give rise to higher housing costs and correspondingly higher taxes?
- Acted to reduce traffic congestion, the attendant air pollution, and injury to our lungs?
- Provided for a school system that will educate all of our children fully and equally?
- Stopped bowing to the self-aggrandizing behavior of the city manager, stopped engaging in waste of tax-payers’ money, and investigated sweetheart deals like the Fort Healy police station project?
