JOHNSON — Humboldt-Table Rock-Steinauer (HTRS) trailed by three at halftime Monday night in the first round of men’s D1-1 sub-district basketball at Johnson-Brock High School.

But fellow seniors Nicolas Knudson and Gage Schaardt combined for 34 points to lead a second-half rally for the Titans. HTRS (11-14) beat McCool Junction 31-13 after halftime to advance to the semifinals with a 52-37 win.

The No. 4-seeded Titans got into foul trouble early in the first half and lost a seven-point second-quarter lead, allowing the No. 5-seeded Mustangs (11-10 ), to take control when entering the locker room.

Titans top scorer Schaardt was fouled twice in the first half and senior Andrew Stalder was netted with three. Junior Ryken Davis was inserted for Stalder, but he too committed three fouls in the first half.

Coach Mike Schaardt sat Stalder through the third quarter and used a combination of Davis and rookie Hunter Bohling to get into the fourth quarter. The strategy worked well and HTRS defended well without fail in the third.

The Titans allowed just five runs in the third, and defensive saves helped them get easier opportunities in transition as the game progressed.

Senior Chase Wilkinson scored a team-high 11 points to lead the Mustangs and junior Trenton Neville added 7 points including two 3-pointers.

HTRS will face No. 1 seed Johnson-Brock at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday for a spot in the finals. No. 3 Thayer Central will face No. 2 Lourdes Central Catholic at the last drink at 7 p.m.

The finals will take place Thursday at 7 p.m.

McCool Junction (11-10): 9, 15, 5, 8 – 37

HTRS (11-14): 9, 12, 13, 18 – 52
