The Malayalam TV MediaOne news channel banned from transmission by the Center

The transmission of Mediaone TV, a major Malayalam-language news channel, supported by Jamaat-e-Islami, was banned by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting for “security reasons”. The channel ceased broadcasting Monday noon.

Mediaone TV editor Pramod Raman said in a statement that the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting had imposed a broadcast ban on the channel. “The ministry said the ban was due to security reasons, but the channel has yet to get details about it. The Union government has not released details of the ban. disposal of Mediaone TV. We have started legal action against the ban. Once the process is completed, the channel would return to the public. We are temporarily suspending the broadcast in the hope that justice will finally prevail,” the statement read. .

Sources from the channel said the license for the TV channel had not expired but the channel’s license renewal process was ongoing at the time of the ban.

Although there was no official word from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, senior ministry sources said the order to block it was issued because the channel had no not obtained security clearance.

An official mentioned that the channel was “denied security clearance” for the renewal of its license as a private satellite television channel in the news category, which is granted for a period of 10 years in accordance with the current policy. The ministry’s list of authorized channels shows that TV channel Media One, in the News category, owned by Madhyamam Broadcasting Ltd, has had uplink and downlink authorizations since September 2011.

According to the Ministry of I&B’s uplink and downlink license policy, each channel must obtain a security clearance, issued by the Ministry of Interior, to obtain a broadcast license in the country. The security clearance is valid for a period of ten years, according to the current policy, after which the chain must obtain it again.

This is the second time in recent years that MediaoneTV has been banned from broadcasting. In March 2020, the Center imposed a 48-hour ban on the channel for violating the provisions of the Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act 1998 while reporting on the riots in North East Delhi. .
