Tri County closes high school due to illness

DEWITT, NE — The disease shuts down classes in part of a southeast Nebraska school district for the second week in a row.

Tri County Schools near DeWitt announced that the district high school will be closed Wednesday and Thursday. Classes at Tri County Elementary School were canceled last Tuesday and Wednesday.

Superintendent Randy Schlueter said 34% of high school students were absent Tuesday for various illnesses and there were not enough substitute teachers to fill absent staff positions. The district will make a decision Thursday afternoon on whether to reopen school for Friday.

“This inconvenience is frustrating, but safety and learning are most important to students and staff,” Schlueter said in an email to parents.

All school activities will continue as planned but may be subject to change.
