Gen. Christopher Cavoli, the current chief of US Army forces in Europe and Africa, has been nominated by President Joe Biden to serve as US General in Europe to head US European Command, it has been announced. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin on Tuesday.

If confirmed, Cavoli will support some 100,000 U.S. troops from all services stationed in Europe as Russia continues to wage war against Ukraine.

If confirmed, he will take over the daily US military effort to assess Russian military movements in Europe and oversee the supply of US and allied weapons to Ukraine. European Command has put in place a massive effort to coordinate Ukraine’s arms requests and help see what can be provided by both the United States and allies. Arms shipments are constantly arriving along NATO’s eastern flank where they are picked up by Ukrainian personnel and brought into the country by rail or truck.

European Command forces also began training a small number of Ukrainian forces outside the country on key systems such as towed artillery.

Oana Lungescu, NATO spokesperson confirmed on Twitter later Tuesday that the alliance’s North Atlantic Council approved Cavoli’s appointment as Supreme Allied Commander Europe. In this role, he will oversee NATO air forces that regularly fly over Europe to track Russian planes, especially when they fly unidentified.

He would replace Air Force General Tod Wolters who is due to retire.

Cavoli speaks Russian and served as Russia director on the staff of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He has also completed a combat tour in western Afghanistan and has extensive knowledge of ground combat operations.
